GALVANISED STEEL

Galvanising is one of the most effective techniques for protecting steel from corrosion. The zinc coating has two main functions: it forms a physical barrier that isolates the steel from environmental agents (barrier effect) and it provides electrochemical protection (cathde effect) because zinc is more electronegative than steel.

Galvanizing is accomplished in the steel plant by electroplanting or by hot dipping.

In electrolytic galvanizing, the pickled metal sheets are dipped in a zinc salt solution and an electric current is passed through it. Electrolysis causes a zinc coating to form on the metal sheets. This is a cold treatment that can be applied to very thin sheets without warping them, and to sheets with small-diameter perforation without obstructing the holes.

Hot dip galvanizing is accomplished by dipping suitably-prepared sheets in tanks of molden zinc (symbol Z) or zinc-iron (symbol ZF). Hot dipping produces a coating with greater mechanical strength and thickness which therefore provides better rust protection in outdoor environments.

The hole walls and the external sheared edges of the perforated sheets obtained from such rolles products, galvanized before drilling, are not coated. However, in these non-protected areas the corrosioni s partially inhibited by electrochemical action. Moreover, during drilling operations, part of the zinc is carried by the punches in their stroke down and partially adheres to hole walls, helping to improve the resistance to corrosion of these uncoated parts.

The DX51D+Z quality, suitable for bending and forming, is currently used for manufacturing perforated sheets; other qualities, for pressing, are used upon request.

Galvanized perforated sheets are used for countless applications, both civil and industrial. Among the most typical are the walkways, walkways, steps and safety guards. Of particular interest is Schiavetti’s Aderstop® which, in the hot-dip galvanized version, is used for the construction of non-slip steps and walkways in the shipbuilding and industrial sector, thanks to its particular anti-slip, draining, heel-proof and panic-resistant design.

Other applications are: protection of machinery (protective casings), industrial separations and sieves, acoustic insulation (sound-absorbing barriers), air conditioning, air vents, grids, industrial filters, interior of dryers, baskets, fences, radiator covers, protections for fireplaces and stoves.
